RAYMOND MHLABA MUNICIPALITY COMMEMORATES INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR DISASTER RISK REDUCTION

13 October 2025 - The Raymond Mhlaba Municipality is joining the global community in commemorating the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) today, 13 October 2025, with a focus on building resilient communities and reducing disaster risks across the municipal area.

The IDDRR theme for 2025, "Fighting inequality for a resilient future," emphasizes that vulnerable populations, particularly those in informal settlements, rural areas, and under-resourced communities, bear the heaviest burden of disasters.  "As a municipality that serves mostly rural areas, we recognize our responsibility to implement inclusive risk reduction strategies that leave no one behind," says the Hon Mayor,

Cllr Nomhle Sango. "Climate change, extreme weather events, and other escalating threats demand coordinated action and community participation,” she said. The municipality is actively implementing several disaster risk eduction initiatives, including strengthening early warning systems and emergency preparedness at the ward level, promoting disaster risk education and awareness in schools and communities, partnering with traditional leaders, non-overnmental organizations, and government departments to build resilience, and encouraging community participation in climate-smart and sustainable practices.
